It’s the new year and with it comes the perfect time to reflect and start something new. To set our intentions and focus in on what we want to cultivate during the upcoming months. One of the best ways to do that? Yoga. Not only can yoga help to reduce stress and improve flexibility, but it can also help reset your focus and bring clarity to your objectives. Here are some perfect poses to add to your 2020 practice for self growth.
Anjaneyasana (Lunge Pose)
This version of the lunge poses helps to open up the hips, chest, and shoulders, while also strengthening the legs. Come into a downward dog pose, separate your legs and then bring your right foot towards the front of the mat and keep your left knee on the ground. As you stand in the pose, focus on deepening the stretch and bringing your right knee directly over your right ankle. To come back to the starting position, lower your right knee to the ground first, then step back into a downward dog pose.
Upavistha Konasana (Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend)
Wide-angle seated forward bend is a classic pose that brings about a deep, full-body stretch. It also helps to reduce stress and, as a bonus, can also improve your digestion. To get into the pose, begin in a seated position with your legs outstretched. Keeping your spine straight, slowly fold forward, allowing your neck and head to relax with the movement. Hold the pose and lower your torso to your legs as you are able, focusing on slowing down your breath while lengthening your spine. To come out of the pose, slowly rise up and bring your hands back to the beginning position.
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog)
Downward-facing dog is a fantastic pose to open up the entire body. To get into the pose, start in the tabletop pose, bring your hands and toes onto the mat and slowly straighten your legs and arms. Engage your core, pull your navel in and up and bring your hips higher. As you breath in, push your heels into the ground and spread your fingers wide. Keep your head between your arms and allow your neck, shoulders, and chest to relax. While in the pose, focus on gentle breaths and release any stale energy.
Yoga can be an incredibly powerful practice and can be used to bring clarity, focus and overall personal growth. Any one, or all ,of these poses can be added to your weekly practice to help cultivate the energy and enthusiasm your looking to manifest in the new year. Namaste!
