Yoga and photography are two activities that I’ve come to love more and more in the past year. After my first yoga class, I became enamored with the practice. I quickly began to experiment with taking pictures of yoga poses, which I enjoyed almost as much as the actual poses themselves. I realized that I was able to capture a moment in time and tell a story with yoga poses that I just couldn’t do with regular photography. Here are some of my favorite yoga poses to photograph.
Chair Pose
Chair pose, also known as Utkatasana, is a powerful balancing posture that strengthens the core while testing the practitioner’s balance. It is often practiced with a raised arm and hand position, creating an illusion of a chair or throne the practitioner is sitting on. It’s a perfect photo opportunity with a background of a mountain or a lake.
Half Camel Pose
Next is half camel pose, or Ardh Ushtrasana. This posture opens the chest and aids in detoxification of the body. It’s a beautiful pose to photograph, as the stretching of the arms and the expansion of the chest make for a strong and empowering statement. Taking the photo from above gives an extra touch of drama, making it one of my favorite yoga poses to photograph.
