Yoga Poses Explained

Yoga is a great way to take time out of your day to restore, relax, and refocus your energy. There are hundreds of yoga poses, and each pose has a different purpose and effect. Here are some poses and their benefits explained.

Tree Pose

The Tree Pose is a balancing pose. It helps with concentration, core stability and flexibility. It also improves sense of direction and one’s balance in general. To do this pose, begin by standing on one foot with your hands held at the center of your chest. Raise the opposite leg up and place the sole of your foot either at the calf or just above the knee of the standing leg. Remain balanced in this pose with your arms overhead for 30 seconds, breathing in and out in a steady rhythm.

Downward-Facing Dog

The Downward-Facing Dog is an all-around great pose. It helps with shoulders, spine and arm strength, stretching, and energy flow. To do this pose, begin on the floor in a high plank position, and then slowly lower your body to the floor. Put your hands shoulder-width apart on the ground with your back straight and your arms straight. Now, push your chest down towards your toes and lift your hips up towards the ceiling. Maintain this pose for 5-10 breaths.

Warrior II

The Warrior II pose is a great standing balancing pose. It increases your energy, strengthens your legs, opens your chest and hips, and heightens your concentration. To do this pose, begin by standing on one leg and spreading your arms out to the side. Bend the knee of your other leg and sink your hips down. Keep your torso parallel to the floor and your shoulders in line with your hips. Remain in this pose for 30 seconds, then switch legs.

Mountain Pose

The Mountain Pose is the easiest pose to do in yoga. It works to improve your posture and helps you to become aware of your body. To do this pose, stand tall with both feet together and your arms at your sides. Make sure your shoulders are back and your spine is straight. Now, inhale and raise your toes, spreading them apart and grounding down through your heels. Begin to exhale and roll your shoulders back, while keeping your chest and chin lifted. Hold this pose for up to 5 minutes or until you feel completely grounded and focused.

Yoga is a great way to combine relaxation and physical activity. By practicing these poses and others, yoga can be used to increase muscle strength, flexibility, and balance. It is also a great way to quiet the mind and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
