How To Do the Surya Namaskar
Surya Namaskar is made up of 12 different postures. To start, stand up straight and keep your feet slightly together. Bring your hands together at your heart, and bow your head slightly forward. This is known as the ‘prayer posture’. On an inhale, bring your hands up above your head and arch your back slightly. This is the ‘raising of hands posture’.
From there, take one step forward and bend your body at the waist while keeping your hands extended above your head. This is the ‘forward bend’. On the next exhale, place your hands on the ground in the ‘plank posture’ and bring your legs back so that you are in a push-up-like position. On the next inhale, bring your chest forward and bend your waist to the ground in the ‘cobra posture’.
On the next exhale, bring your hip forward into the downward-facing dog posture, then step forward and bend your waist again for the next ‘forward bend’ posture. On the following inhale, bring your hands up above your head again for the next ‘raising of hands posture’. As you exhale, bring your hands back to your heart and bow your head slightly forward. This completes the Surya Namaskar cycle.
